On October 20th, the Anglican Church of the Resurrection in Bucharest’s Gradina Icoanei will celebrate 100 years since the first cornerstone of the building was laid in 1913. Construction of the red-bricked church was interrupted by the outbreak of World War I and it was eventually finished in 1922 after the war ended. Since then, services have been held regularly in the church, except for the years 1940 to 1944 when the church was closed during the German occupation of Bucharest. The Anglican Church has been open for worship continuously apart from that period with the support of chaplains who  [ Read More ]

May at the Church of Resurrection was a busy month.  Attendance has been up slightly thanks to Father Patrick Irwin providing bread and wine before he left Bucharest.  Nick Hammond and Alison Mutler performed the first ever communion by extension.  The service was approved by Patrick Curran and everyone in the congregation appeared to appreciate the opportunity, so much so that the next communion by extension service will be held June 2nd.  Thanks to Ian Cousins should be made for creating and reproducing all of the order of service booklets for this special service.  While we are at it, we  [ Read More ]

Dear Friends, The Pope and I are resigning.  I had not anticipated the news from the Vatican which adds a further excitement to this spring of change. There is a new Archbishop of Canterbury awaiting his enthronement on 21st March, and a new Patriarch of Bulgaria to be elected and enthroned on 24th February. Now there will also be an election for a new Pope. Your prayers are asked for the electors in Sofia and Rome.  All Cardinals under 80 years of age will have to draw a line through their busy appointment diaries and head to the Vatican in order to  [ Read More ]

Dear Friends, At present the Church of the Resurrection is throbbing with music, as jazz musicians prepare for a performance this evening by the Nordic Jazz Trio, for which all the tickets have been sold.  Tomorrow (Tuesday) there will be another concert in church at 7 p.m., to which I hope that you will be able to come.  The John Powell Singers, a distinguished choir from Manchester in England, will be giving a concert of sacred music from the fifteenth to the twentieth century in aid of church funds.  The choir has included us in its first tour of Romania specifically to  [ Read More ]

Dear Friends, The monthly newsletter has now returned after the summer break.  The break was caused less by the heat than by the fact that I have been functioning singlehandedly for the last two months.  I mean that literally, as my right wrist and hand have been out of action and I have been sporting a dashing blue sling.  I look back fondly to the days when the only sling I encountered was a drink in Singapore!  Thorough medical tests have shown that there is no lasting damage to the bone structure and also no indication of arthritis.  The cause  [ Read More ]
